Meet the Engineer: Tom Gountras

Tom Gountras is a valued addition to the Walden team bringing more than 40 years of civil engineering experience.  Prior to working with The Secant Group (which merged with Walden in 2018, Walden Grows Through Acquisition), Tom was a senior level engineer with the Division of Utilities with the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana.  Tom investigated neighborhood drainage complaints and safety issues, facilitated improvement projects consisting of simple maintenance to full reconstruction.  Tom has conducted countless Informational meetings with residents and manages projects through to construction completion and close-out.

Currently Tom works for Walden focusing primarily with his continued work with Fort Wayne City Utilities.  He is a seasoned and unflappable resource for stormwater utilities projects and he also serves to assist, train and mentor other younger staff.  Tom has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.

Tom has had a hand in developing stormwater training modules, spreadsheet tools and templates for facilitating the design of projects which have become standardized throughout his workplace environments.  He enjoys mentoring younger engineers at Fort Wayne City Utilities.

“I have chosen to focus on water resource issues because I like to deal with everyday visual/physical objects such as rain, drainage, flooding, rivers, ditches, ponds, pipes, manholes and inlets. I enjoy resolving problems for conditions that someone could actual see unlike other fields that are revolved around of less visual/physical objects”

On one of Tom’s more recent projects, he was able to identify hundreds of thousands of dollars in cost savings for the City of Fort Wayne.  Two separate previous engineering studies determined a deteriorating river outfall was in danger of collapse and therefor the City prioritized funding to make improvements to replace the failing infrastructure.  Each of the two studies called for the full replacement of the structures, expensive disposal of nearby environmentally impacted soils, and complicated restoration of the riverbank section.  Tom thoroughly reviewed the designs and instead developed plans that rehabilitated and stabilized the existing structures and outfall pipe and hardened the slopes.  Tom’s creativity and passion for seeking better alternative solutions to problems continues to be appreciated by this long-standing client.

Walden is pleased to provide Tom’s experience and professionalism to our clients in their search for cost-effective solutions.
