Mill Brook Preserve, Inc. (MBPI) is an organization specifically established to take care of the Mill Brook Preserve. The Mill Brook Preserve is a community treasure in New Paltz, NY that comprises 134 acres of land to be kept forever wild, located entirely in the Village of New Paltz but with portions owned by the Village and portions owned by the Town of New Paltz, stretching from behind Duzine Elementary School to a nearby assisted living facility. MBPI was granted 501 (c) (3) status under federal tax law after signing an agreement with the Town and Village of New Paltz, and the Wallkill Valley Land Trust granting MBPI the right to manage the Mill Brook Preserve moving forward. All monetary contributions were previously handled by the New Paltz Community Foundation (NPCF). Community Foundation members gave MBPI an official check for funds generously received from the McBride Endowment, Bruce McKinney, the Mohonk Preserve and other donors.

MBPI’s mission is to promote and protect biodiversity and wildlife habitats, while providing recreational and educational opportunities within the Mill Brook Preserve. This “Green Heart” of New Paltz includes trails, forest ecology/wildlife habitat and educational opportunities involving elementary students to high school and college level students for research efforts.

Long term goals outlined by Mill Brook Preserve include improving the existing trail system via strategically placed interpretive and locational signage, along with enhancements such as kiosks, observation platforms, wooden bridges over streams and bog bridges over marshy areas.

Walden Environmental Engineering serves as the Preserve Engineer for the Mill Brook Preserve. This includes serving as a technical and regulatory resource to the Board and Executive Director. Challenges and projects underway include seeking more entrances and access points to the open space, planning future improvements, grant opportunities and troubleshooting existing day-to-day issues such as slippery bridges, trail marking and non-point pollution prevention.

“The Mill Brook Preserve is an excellent example of an urban protected green space cooperatively established by concerned citizens, alignment from several local government efforts and members of the environmental community. Walden is excited to be a part of this community jewel”. Ted Nitza, VP/Senior Project Manager at Walden
