Engineering Design Services
Walden prepares engineering designs for a vast array of projects, working closely with clients from preliminary concepts to final design. We first evaluate our client’s needs and formulate designs within the site parameters and framework of regulations and standards that apply to the project. We evaluate site conditions, identify applicable design standards, and complete engineering calculations to develop the design. Design drawings are prepared throughout the process and presented to the client to ensure that the design meets expectations. Walden can help you design projects including the following:
Bid Preparation and Management
Walden has vast experience in both private and municipal project bidding. We perform all services related to the bidding process. Walden prepares bid packages including contracts, proposal sheets, project conditions, and technical specifications. We then compile a list of qualified bidders, issue the bid notice, and provide instructions to bidders to ensure an unbiased field of bidders. Walden conducts pre-bid meetings to clarify the project design and logistics, answering questions from interested bidders. After bids are submitted, Walden evaluates and compares them to ensure none contain unbalanced pricing; contractor references are also checked. Walden then prepares a bid recommendation to the client so the project can be awarded.
Walden has performed construction oversight since the firm was founded over 20 years ago on both designs Walden has performed and as a stand-alone service. We believe in getting the job completed on-time and within the contractor’s approved budget. Walden thoroughly reviews project specifications and design plans so we know what needs to be done. We attend pre-construction meetings with client, contractors and involved regulatory agencies. Walden reviews and approves subcontractors, suppliers, shop drawings, and other project submittals. We manage material testing (i.e. soil borings, concrete tests), maintain daily inspectors reports and material quantity records, and perform air monitoring to ensure safe working conditions and compliance with the project CAMP. Walden also ensures that the contractor follows industry standard health and safety protocols. We review and approve contractor claims/payment requests, conduct final inspections and generate punchlists for project completion. Our primary focus is ensuring that the client gets the system they are paying for with few headaches and no change orders. Walden takes detailed field notes to document all contractor activities in order to protect our clients in the event of contractor disputes. We take pride in our construction inspection and management services, looking out for our clients’ best interests and not caving into contractor requests.
Public works projects must comply with Davis Bacon prevailing wage requirements. Walden checks contractor invoices and supporting documentation such as certified payrolls to ensure that the prevailing wage requirements are met. In addition, many of the projects Walden performs for clients are funded through various grant programs and are subject to other individualized requirements specific to the program. Walden is familiar with these requirements and associated reporting related to Minority/Woman Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE), HUD Section 3, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance, to name a few. Regardless of the funding source, Walden has the expertise to help you maximize funding and comply with the requirements that apply to your project.
Walden has completed road resurfacing projects for many public and private clients. Roadway projects include field work, surveys, planning, and design to support a variety of paving activities including: demolition/milling existing road; removal of unclassified excavation materials; installation of new subbase and asphalt; installation of new curbs and gutters; and installation of new drainage and associated piping. Walden’s engineering design drawings present the modified road profiles showing the grades of the new roads. We develop detailed cost estimates to aid owners in selecting the preferred paving alternative. Walden’s engineers have experience in roadway design and understand that it is essential to ensure sufficient centerline and curb/gutter elevations when laying out new roads. Road elevation is a common component of many road improvement projects in communities that are subject to frequent flooding due to tidal water intrusion and ineffective drainage systems. Walden has the experience to properly design roads to reduce flooding on the roads and minimize impacts beyond the curb.
Emergency Generator Design and Installation Oversight
Walden has designed emergency back-up generators for clients to provide uninterrupted electrical service to keep their operations running in the event of a power outage. We perform electrical needs assessments by developing as-built power distribution drawings. Walden sizes transfer switches and electrical connections needed for the generator to supply the required loads to support facility operations. Walden designs permanent stationary generators and mobile generator facilities in compliance with all applicable requirements set forth in the National Electric Code, the National Fire Protection Association standards, and other federal, state and local regulations. We also provide fuel storage design and permitting services as needed to support generator installations.
Pump House/Station Design and Construction
Walden has designed both sewage pump stations and potable water pump houses and pumping systems. These designs often include supply and sizing of electrical services and components, mechanical systems and controls. In the case of water supply well systems, Walden’s engineering design includes pump sizing, well screen sizing, and selection of surface treatment methods to adjust pH or remove contaminants to ensure compliance with the drinking water standards.
Water and Wastewater Treatment System Design and Construction
Walden designs water treatment systems and sizes equipment to remove industrial residuals from client’s wastewaters in pre-treatment unit operations or full scale wastewater treatment plants to meet NPDES/SPDES receiving waters permit limits. Walden’s skilled design engineers have designed systems to treat domestic wastewaters and remove contaminants including VOCs, metals or pesticides/herbicides. Potable water treatment designs have featured Reverse Osmosis (RO), Air Stripping, Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and Ion Exchange technologies.
Solid Waste Facility Design and Layout
Walden has over 20 years of experience in designing and permitting solid waste facilities including landfill operations, scale houses and solid waste transfer stations handling waste oil, waste cooking oil, construction and demolitions debris (C&D), clean fill, waste tires and scrap metals. Walden’s experience includes selection and layout of sorting and screening equipment. We also help clients with scale house placement, traffic throughput planning, and annual operational permitting requirements.
Walden has designed numerous fueling systems and assisted clients develop centralized fueling centers to make operations more efficient and cost-effective. We design diesel, gasoline and CNG fueling systems, performing all calculations and equipment evaluations to select the USTs, dispensers, piping, monitoring systems, and safety items that are right for the job and meet all applicable standards and requirements.
Septic systems continue to be used in areas not hooked up to public sewers. Walden designs new septic systems and modifications of existing systems to ensure that the septic systems have the capacity to handle the design flow and perform as required considering the site conditions and leaching characteristics. We also incorporate nitrogen reduction technologies in our designs to minimize septic system impacts on regional groundwater and surface water quality.
Walden evaluates existing drainage systems to determine how effectively stormwater is collected and discharged. We design new drainage and modified systems to protect client facilities and municipalities against flooding. Walden inventories drainage infrastructure to layout the existing structures and elevations as the starting point in our designs. Drainage catch basins, manholes, piping and collection structures are sized and located to optimize system capacity and performance. In addition, site grading plans are developed and curbs/gutters are installed to direct stormwater to the collection points in order to prevent pooling.
Walden designs new bulkheads and modifications to ensure that existing bulkheads protect public and private properties from flood damage. The bulkheads are designed at elevations based on FEMA base flood elevations. Materials of construction are specified based on applicable requirements and typical construction standards. Drainage outfalls are fitted with tide valves to prevent tidal water from entering the drainage piping. Stream bank protection measures such as gabion baskets are incorporated in Walden’s designs where appropriate.
Walden has designed building modifications or new construction of structures in support of our engineering projects. Our building designs include salt storage facilities, supply well pump houses, treatment structures, truck wash facilities, etc.
Storm Reconstruction Evaluations
Walden’s engineers use modeling software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D to simulate storm events and drainage system performance. The modeling results are used to support road and drainage system design projects.
Stormwater Mapping and Planning
Walden inventories stormwater infrastructure including catch basins, manholes, piping and outfalls, and maps these features in our GIS database. Information on sizes, elevations and conditions is also entered into the GIS. Walden uses the GIS maps and data to establish stormwater system surveys which are used by municipalities to plan for improvement projects.
Stormwater Treatment Systems
Walden designs systems to manage and control stormwater discharges in compliance with applicable SPDES and MS4 requirements. Treatment methods such as filtration, settling and hydrodynamic separators are included in Walden’s designs to remove solids, oil and grease, and other contaminants from stormwater to avoid impacts on receiving water quality.
Walden teams with Licensed Surveyor (LS) subcontractors when projects require LS stamped survey drawings. When the project does not require LS services, Walden has the tools and expertise to provide surveying services utilizing a combination of GPS, drone flights, other aerial survey equipment, or simple levels to provide surveyed information necessary to prepare project maps and drawings.
Walden has developed an electrical distribution GIS based mapping system utilizing ARCFM software riding on top of ArcGIS. Related project services relate to digitization of system maps and field verification. Walden has used GPR to locate and map buried utilities in as-built studies prior to design or excavation projects.
Air Treatment Control Design
Walden engineers are experts in air regulations and provide our clients with consulting services to ensure that emissions are controlled to comply with applicable limits. We perform facility evaluations to characterize emissions sources and develop permit applications. When needed, Walden designs emissions control systems which utilize equipment to control flow, remove contaminants and/or provide zero discharge as required by the regulations.
