Environmental Engineering

Comprehensive engineering services are provided relating to the planning, design, construction, and operation of municipal and industrial water, wastewater, and hazardous material / waste storage facilities, including expansion and upgrading of existing facilities. Design planning services involve development of as-built plans, treatability and process evaluation, and feasibility and comparative cost review. Integral with the design of any structure is the detailed review and evaluation of actual and negotiated permit requirements, which are part of facility planning design. Walden's corporate experience encompasses a diverse range of projects.

Remedial System Design

Walden stresses the importance of selecting appropriate remedial options for a site, considering the clean-up objectives (which are typically based on regulatory standards), realistic exposure scenarios, remedial timeframe and cost. Walden is mindful of our clients' goals to comply with applicable environmental regulations in the most time and cost efficient way possible. Walden's skilled team of engineers and hydrogeologists designs remediation systems to address contaminated soil, groundwater, and soil vapor in order to mitigate impacts on the site and nearby properties. Walden has designed a wide variety of remedial solutions, such as soil vapor extraction, air sparging, bioremediation, pump and treat, and passive and active product recovery systems. This expertise allows Walden to meet the requirements of regulatory agencies while selecting the most appropriate and cost-effective remedial technology to suit our clients' needs.

SEQR/NPDES/Solid Waste Permit

SEQR Review

Walden has reviewed permit applications that propose changing a land-use zone. This typically triggers a State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) Environmental Impact Statement. Walden has reviewed several Draft Environmental Impact Statements (DEIS) to make comments on its thoroughness. Walden also reviews project applications during the SEQR Scoping process to add additional areas to be studied in the DEIS. Click here for more information of SEQR.

Solid Waste Permitting

Both state and local authorities regulate solid waste transfer and processing facilities. Facility planning and operation have become an often-confusing process, which often requires engineering assistants to plan for facility set-up or operational modifications. Walden has a thorough understanding of the Solid Waste regulations, permit requirements, and facility design and operational considerations necessary to aid in all aspects of solid waste transfer and processing.

Walden staff have a strong rapport with New York and New Jersey solid waste regulatory agencies which is invaluable in addressing solid waste issues that tend to be clouded by public opposition and other competing interest. Our ability to engage in concise and open dialogue with the regulatory agencies is essential in performing solid waste services efficiently and effectively.

NPDES

Walden can help prepare SPDES (State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) or NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) pemits for discharges to groundwater or surface water. Walden can also help negotiate sampling plans to help reduce annual analytical costs. Walden also can prepare the required Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs).

Landfill Capping Design

Walden has designed landfill caps in accord with NYSDEC 360 Regulations. Work includes capping designs, gas migration studies, liner installations, clay installations, soil testing, variances to 360 requirements based on site conditions and materials deposited. Walden also has completed capping oversight services to ensure work was completed in accord with NYSDEC approved designs. Oversight work includes permeability testing, soil teesting (moisture, dry density, compaction) and general construction oversight.
