The effects of Hurricane Sandy were devastating for many towns and villages on Long Island. The New York State Office of Emergency Management (State OEM) recently requested that affected municipalities submit projects to be considered for grant funds that it is administering under FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). The HMGP is aimed at reducing the risk of loss and damage associated with future disasters. Walden assisted local municipalities with the writing of their initial grant applications for projects including rebuilding bulkheads, installing drainage structures and purchasing and installing emergency generators. Walden filed 35 separate projects for these municipalities totaling a staggering $52,300,000 in grant fund requests. It is our sincere hope that Long Island never faces another storm like Hurricane Sandy, but in the event we may, it is reassuring to know that these projects will help significantly reduce the impact of such storms on the residents of Long Island.
